1) New song
To
celebrate International Day Against Homophobia 2008 we have
released our brand new song Time To Delight as free download. Click
here for more.
2) The
Band Formerly Known as The Standard Deviations???
Sadly, it transpires that a band of similar name to
ours has trademarked
their name within the US. This has created some uncertainty as to
whether we can continue to use the name The Standard Deviations
in the long-term.
While this is being sorted out we have chosen to remove our songs from
itunes and CDBaby, so we offer our sincere apologies to all those who
have searched and not found us!
We have been advised that continued use of our name within Australia is
highly unlikely to present any legal problems, and we are hence taking
our time seeking the perfect new moniker. All suggestions for new band
name (preferably pithy, witty and in keeping with the celebration of
diversity and lyrical depth!) are welcome.
3) Are
we running a dating agency??
Miranda Bradley has just become the third member in the
band’s short history to join The Standard Deviations and then
to quickly fall in love with someone interstate!!! She’s off to Canberra. We
will miss her **lots** but look forward to playing with her
on many future ventures. She will be singing with us on new song
Somersaults to be released on the forthcoming SCALA album.
4) Are there
really no gig listings this month?
Ah yes…we have been having a break
while Miranda moves states, Vicki writes a mini- musical for her
mother’s 70th birthday
party(slight bennett-esque exaggeration) and Mary educates the
judiciary about SA’s new rape laws. Announcements of future
gig dates
should appear in June.
5)
What else are we doing??
We’re enjoying lots and lots of
songwriting, individually, in
collaboration between Vicki and Mary, and in broader collaboration.
Particularly pleasurable have been our monthly trio songwriting
sessions with David Denborough from the Dulwich Centre. David's
beautiful singing can be heard on our new free download Time To Delight.
Vicki also attended the inaugural APRA Sydney Song Summit and was
completely star struck, and inspired to new writing, after
participating in sessions with such luminaries as Jimmy Webb and Paul
Williams, as well as James Mercer from The Shins. Brilliant!!
More news soon and in the meantime we wish everyone a Happy
International day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) for 17th May.
